Composed by Brian Sadler and commissioned by Daniel Watt and the University of Wyoming Trombone Studio, Shadows of the Tetons is a musical journey through the landscapes, history, and folklore of the American West. While inspired by several iconic symbols of Wyoming, the work takes its title from the Grand Tetons, whose towering peaks stand as silent witnesses to the stories that unfold beneath them.

The piece opens with a broad, majestic theme that serves as the musical foundation for the entire work. Evoking vast horizons, rugged mountains, and endless skies, this theme reappears throughout the composition in a variety of forms, reflecting the many faces of Wyoming's frontier spirit.

Without pause, the music transitions into Range Wars, an energetic and dramatic section inspired by the violent disputes that occasionally erupted between ranchers and cattle companies across the American frontier. Driving rhythms, bold fanfares, and rapid exchanges between voices depict the struggle for land, livestock, and survival in the rugged West.

The tension gives way to Hoe-Down, a lively celebration inspired by traditional Western dances. Syncopated rhythms, playful melodies, and spirited ensemble writing capture the sense of community and joy found in gatherings after long days of work on the plains.

The final section, Devil's Tower, returns to the grandeur of the opening. Rising from the landscape like the famous Wyoming landmark itself, the music gradually expands in scope and intensity. Fragments of the opening theme reappear in increasingly heroic forms, culminating in a powerful conclusion that celebrates both the enduring beauty of Wyoming and the larger-than-life legends that have grown beneath the shadows of the Tetons.

Though each section presents a different facet of Wyoming's character, the recurring majestic opening theme serves as a unifying thread, connecting stories of conflict, celebration, and natural wonder beneath the watchful presence of the Tetons.
